Bundoran, County Donegal

A freight train stand up left-handed barrel. Experts only! Check out Tullan and the Bundoran breaks for more options.

Donegal is a county of contrasts, from the big-wave haven of Mullaghmore to the popular surf town of Bundoran, crammed with surf shops, hostels, surf hire places and surf schools, to the wilds of the areas north-west of Donegal. If you want a surf trip where you can sleep in a nice, family-run hotel which serves a cracking full breakfast, or if you want to camp under the shadow of a mountain before heading off for a surf at the crack of dawn with no-one around, Co. Donegal is the place for you. The Irish are proud of their surf scene and you'll find a warm welcome. Lots of options for walkers too, with loads of cultural sites to visit in between surf sessions. The scenery is just stunning, whether it's sunny or raining, and it really pays to get out and explore all the corners of Donegal. Use The Surf Directory as a jumping-off point and be assured, there are loads and loads of excellent breaks to be found with a decent map in hand. Camper vans and campsites are ideal options for those on a budget.

Bear in mind that you cannot hire surfboards (apart from beginners' foam boards) in Ireland. Take your own or buy something there.
